Piggy in the Middle
The 4XL group, organised under the umbrella of the Prince's Trust Scotland, is an alternative curriculum group working outside the traditional subject areas. It aims to develop teamwork skills, self-awareness, skills for the workplace, and most importantly of all, active citizenship. XL groups consist of pupils who may be at risk of exclusion, truanting, and/or underachievement.
4XL and Piggy In the Middle
The following is an overview written by Thomas, a member of the group.
The Background
We were exploring various possibilities for our community project and decided to invite the police to do some work with us.
The Idea
We came up with the idea of making a realistic video exploring relationships between young people and the police.
The Process
We devised four scenes: young people being negative about the police, young people trying to relate to the difficulties of police work through roleplay, trying to understand what it's like being a victim of crime, and finally the group reaching a fairer opinion of the police. Working with Linda and Bill from the police and Mr. Davidson from the Learning Centre, we produced the film.
Final Comments
The group greatly enjoyed working with the police on this project. Our relationships with and attitudes towards the police were greatly improved as a result. We gained great satisfaction from seeing a project through from the initial planning stage to the completed final product. It is a matter of some pride to us that the police intend to use the video both in schools and with other youth groups.
