History and Geography… made easier with video editing.
This is one of a number of ideas developed in The Learning Centre aiming to use video technology as a means of improving pupil learning within the classroom. This Project is targeted towards First Year Secondary pupils using video editing technology as a learning tool in the study of the history and geography of Bellshill.
Aims
- To cover a range of specific curricular targets relating to the History and Geography of the local area.
- To use ICT as a means of developing innovative learning within the curriculum.
- To develop a learning model that can be applied across the curriculum in such as Technology, RE and English.
- To develop an effective learning model that can be adopted and developed for use in other learning establishments.

The changing landscape of Bellshill
DescriptionThe Project consists of a series of video clips, still photographs and maps of Bellshill, dating from the modern day back to the Eighteenth Century, from which Pupils produce their own individual video documentary of the history of the local area. Each pupil had to record their own individual voice over and then add it to their video.
There are four key stages to the project:
- Students are taught how to use the basic video editing software for the project including labelling clips, ordering them, cropping and changing time-lengths, adding special effects and transitions, as well as recording voice-overs.
- The pupils are given the labels for the 33 different clips, maps and pictures and have to match them up correctly to those on the computer. In some cases these are more obvious such as the pictures of Bellshill Academy today and Bellshill Academy in 1910. Others involve looking at a number of pictures to see how change has undertaken overtime such as the four maps of the town from 1856, 1899, 1955 and 2000.
- Having labelled all of the clips appropriately the pupils then go on to place them in an order that would best enable them to tell the story of Bellshill and how it has changed over time. Their decisions are assisted by a handout with information concerning the town, its people and its industry.
- Finally, the pupils write and record their own voice-overs for their documentaries using information taken form the handouts, observations form the clips and information they have researched or discovered themselves. This stage also involves editing the clips so that they fit the commentaries.
