Urban Art

A group of thirteen year old pupils were caught drawing graffiti in The Learning Centre, no cans of spray paint were found, it was all done on computers.

Pupils produced their own designs on white paper using their own first names. The images were scanned into the computer and then the process of colouring the artwork up using Photoshop Elements began. Using airbrushing techniques and filters, the black and white drawings were transformed into urban art masterpieces.

Pupils were very excited about this project as it is culturally something they can relate to. As a result, pupils performed very well, as the examples of work show. This tutorial introduced pupils to the basic concepts associated with Photoshop such as using Layers, which is one the main features of working in Photoshop. As soon as pupils grasp this concept, using the package for future projects becomes easier for both pupils and staff.

Staff at The Learning Centre have extensive knowledge of Photoshop and have found Elements to be an ideal way of introducing pupils to an industry standard graphics package. This version is also a far more affordable way for schools to teach Photoshop and is a fraction of the cost of the full version.
