Learnskape eLearning Software
This initiative has produced e-learning software that has a practical application in the context of lifelong learning. It is available for use via the Internet or an intranet.
The package has been designed to allow for flexible open learning giving instant feedback and correction. It uses the full range of multi-media with the intention of promoting interest in the content as well ensuring relevance by the appropriate use of format. It is intended that using this software will be a motivational, interest-generating learning experience.
The Initiative is built on a partnership approach led by The Learning Centre. Strategic partners include Scottish Enterprise, North Lanarkshire Council Education Department, Motherwell North SIP, Learning Teaching Scotland and the Scottish Qualifications Authority. At the project implementation level, partners include North Lanarkshire Council Community Services Adult Literacy and Numeracy and Motherwell College.
The three core functions of the software are Learning, Evaluation and Assessment.
- Learning
The programme allows the learner to undertake relevant learning through self-testing as part of a flexible learning package. Self-testing is a powerful learning and revision aid, particularly given the software's inbuilt capability to give instant feedback, corrective explanations and summary evaluation reports. The multi-media design is motivational as well as ensuring appropriate question formatting.
- Evaluation
The programme allows both self-evaluation for individual learners as well as whole class evaluation for trainers. The trainer will be able to review individuals in the context of their whole class group, identify learning patterns and knowledge gaps as well as evaluate progress in the context of expected outcomes.
- Assessment
Each question can be tagged in relation to set standards such as those defined by SQA, thus allowing instant assessment of progress and development in relation to accepted standards. The table of questions available to a trainer under any subject heading allows them to group the questions into any number of new tests to suit their own method of implementing the curriculum. In the context of SQA courses that are modular-based, this system allows for effective assessment of progress whilst allowing the trainer to mix and match the questions to suit their own method of curriculum delivery, whilst still being assured of covering the whole curriculum requirements.
The package has been piloted in several Secondary schools in North Lanarkshire, Motherwell College and at the Community services centres at the Orbit, Bellshill and the Muirfield Centre, Cumbernauld. Feedback from the Learners and Trainers is positive with the majority of the Learners impressed with the package and enjoyed this new learning experience. They hope that the project will continue and the more content can be provided to enhance their learning. Currently the project has over 1000 questions created in several subject areas including French, RE, First Aid and Adult Literacy with additional questions being developed in Mathematics, Technical and HIV.
