Do you know anyone aged 16-25 years and interested in filmmaking?
To celebrate Ken Loach’s 75th birthday, the BFI, First Light, Film Club and Film Education are launching a competition for young creators, inspired by the work of Ken Loach.
We are looking for talented filmmakers aged 16-25 years to submit short films up to 3 minutes in duration that tell new stories, give a voice to interesting characters and challenge audiences to think differently about the world we all live in.
The 10 best entries will be invited to a celebratory event at the BFI Southbank in November where the winning filmmakers will be announced.
Two runners up will receive 6 months subscription to Love Film.
The winning filmmaker will receive:
• The opportunity to be part of a special academy programme at the BFI Future Film Festival February 2012;
• Mentoring and career advice from a film industry professional;
• Their film published online by the BFI and First Light.

The LensHeads film school from North Lanarkshire have produced their short film STRINGS ATTACHED and have been nominated for a prestigious FIRST LIGHT AWARD.
‘Strings Attached’ tells the story of Johnny and his wife. Did he remember it’s her birthday? Buy her a present, collect her from the airport, make her happy; Johnny needs to get it right. He needs to do it all in a hurry, but has he bought her present with no strings attached?
As part of the ‘Best Drama’ category, the group will be judged by Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace, Casino Royale), Nathan Stewart Jarrett (MisFits) and Claudia Winkleman (Film 2011) against three other films from Somerset, Scotland and Belfast.
Hosted by Nick Grimshaw, the ceremony will be attended by a mix of film industry luminaries and celebrities who will present the awards across a range of categories including ‘Best Animation’, ‘Best Drama’, and ‘Best Original Music’. This year’s event will take place at ODEON, Leicester Square, London on the afternoon of Tuesday 15th March.
Nick Grimshaw said “I’m really looking forward to presenting the First Light Awards in March. It promises to be a great event plus I get to watch some really cool films and meet some great people.”
FIRST LIGHT helps young people from all backgrounds to develop their skills, talent, creativity, confidence and entrepreneurial capabilities. The organization provides opportunities for young people to work with industry professionals on high quality, youth led digital media projects.
Two of Lensheads’ films have been shortlisted for the Discovery Youth Screen Award. Both Missing You and Strings Attached will be screened on Sunday 31st October, along with the other shortlisted films, at 3pm at DCA as part of the Discovery Film Festival.
The final Discovery Youth Screen Award will go to the film that wins the audience vote on the day. The winner of the award on the day receives the accolade of being the best film made by under 18s across the whole of Scotland.
There will also be two additional awards given this year – the Edinburgh Skillset Screen and Media Academy Award for Scriptwriting and a Youth Film and The Dundee Rep Theatre Prize for Acting in a Youth Film. These will be judged by representatives from The Dundee Rep Theatre and Edinburgh Skillset Screen and Media Academy.

Producers Spillers Pantomimes are holding open auditions on Friday 3 September to find local boys to fill the roles of The Lost Boys (20 parts available) and girls to become juvenile dancers (18 parts available).

Summerlee Photomedia Studio opened in February 2010 within Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life, Coatbridge. This new studio offers traditional and digital photography and for the first time, the moving image and digital music making facilities.
A wide range of classes and one off workshops are available giving an opportunity to learn the basics of photography along with more advanced techniques.

LensHeads film Backfire has picked up yet another award to add to the two awards already on the shelf.
At the Seoul International Youth Film Festival held in July 2010, Backfire was awarded the Artistic Experiment Award by the SIYFF Jury.
Backfire headed a packed program of international short films at this festival, which is the biggest youth film festival in Korea and one of the biggest in Aisa.
So once again, well done LensHeads.
London 2012′s short film competition for young people opened for entries on the 23rd June 2010.
The interactive website where films can be uploaded, viewed and commented on went live at noon on 23 June at www.filmnation.org.uk
Log on to watch and vote for your favourite. Information on the first London 2012 workshops to share skills on making short films is also available.
The first round of Film Nation is now open for young people between the ages of 13 to 25, with prizes available for the film that gets the most votes each month by viewers.
The closing date for the first round of Film Nation: Shorts is 1st October 2010, with a star-studded red-carpet awards ceremony taking place in December 2010.
In 2012 the best films from the 2 year programme will win the chance to be shown in iconic sporting venues during the Games in 2012 as well as at high profile screenings around the country.
